Fort Santiago, Manila

4.1
#1 of 452 in Parks in Luzon
Guarding the strategic mouth of the River Pasig, Fort Santiago played an important role as the citadel of Intramuros, the old city of Manila, and the seat of Spanish rule. Dedicated to Saint James the Moor-Slayer, the fort served as the key defense fortress for Spaniards, defending the most important spice trade port for 333 years. Nearly triangular and 620 m (2,030 ft) around, the stone-walled complex with an impressive carved gate now houses muzzle-loading canons and World War II grenades, set in a lovely, well-manicured garden with a water fountain. You can see the brass steps that commemorate Jose Rizal’s last walk to the firing squad, while Rizal Shrine displays a collection of memorabilia from the national hero’s life. • You should visit and learn a lot. Minimal fee for preservation I think. It’s like time travelling to history books.  more »
  • If you are in Intramuros, make sure to include this place to your plan. I think the fee is P75-P100. A small amount for what you can see and learn inside.  more »

  • Very peaceful place, you can come on good weather day and sit at the bank of river along the pathways. Moreover this place is dedicated to Rizal, there is a museum inside about his life and his last days in the same prison. The structures in this fort are impressive and unique. The idea of having wall around the fort was to protect it from enemies to enter.
  • An excellent and beautiful place to visit if you want to learn more about the history of the Philippines. Make sure to get a guide so that you can have a better understanding of everything that you are looking at. Enjoy!
