Situated on the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss, York has witnessed an abundance of major political events throughout its two millennia of existence.
Appreciate the collections at Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum and National Railway Museum. Explore hidden gems such as Filey Beach and Fountains Abbey. When in York, make a side trip to see Scarborough Beach in Scarborough, approximately 1h 10 min away. There's still lots to do: admire the striking features of Castle Howard, wander the streets of York Shambles, steep yourself in history at York City Walls, and take in the spiritual surroundings of York Minster.
