Housing both an abbey and the battleground of the most famous battle in English history, Battle Abbey and Battlefield memorializes the fallen at the 1066 Battle of Hastings. Began under the orders of William the Conqueror after he wrested England from the Anglo-Saxons, the abbey hosts movies and CGI displays to explain this turning point in British history. In the Abbey, feel the pulse of history by standing where the last Anglo-Saxon ruler, King Harold, was slain. Outside, walk around the grounds of the actual site of the battle and use the audio guide to learn how it all unfolded. The official website has an activity pack to download filled with games and activities to engage the entire family. With our world travel planner, Battle attractions like Battle Abbey and Battlefield can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Very interesting, the museum part is playful, the setting is beautiful. One can go to the site of the battle and realize the difficulties faced by the soldiers in 1066. If you can, get a guide! Super interesting!

  • I recommend Battle Abbey for a visit for all the family, parking is available at the side of the Abbey, alas its not free you will have pay on entry into the Abbey, it will be free to English Heritage members from 1st April, an audio tour is available but be prepared for narrow steps and small rooms when adventuring into the tower gate house as there is no accessible route into the tower or up to the roof. An exhibition on life in the Abbey can be found within the tower before you reach the gate house roof with views over the battlefield and the town of Battle. In the Abbey grounds there is a small children's Play area and a visitor centre with a cafe that offers light lunches and refreshments, the centre also has an exhibition on the Battle.
  • Brilliant day out, especially at half term. Picturesque village literally next door. Well preserved Abbey and thought provoking views of the battlefield. As I say with every National Trust or English Heritage place, daily charges are usually a rip off, go for annual membership.
