Mottisfont Abbey, Mottisfont

Originally founded in 1201 as an Augustinian priory, Mottisfont Abbey now stands as a romantic house set in riverside gardens. The priory was destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII. Mottisfont was bestowed to a favored statesman who turned it into a country home, though sections of the original medieval church remain. Explore the house and find traces of the people who have lived there for 800 years, from the great cellarium where the monks kept their stores, to the knick-knacks of 20th-century hostess Maud Russell. Amble through the garden, a mix of formal lawns and specialist spaces, and trek further into the surrounding woodland, filled with ancient trees and bubbling brooks. Check out the gallery, which runs different exhibitions and installations throughout the year. Top off your visit by feasting on local produce at the Kitchen Cafe, or indulge your sweet tooth at the ice cream parlor in the stable block.
