Bourbon Street, New Orleans

The heart of the city's oldest neighborhood, the layout of Bourbon Street was designed in 1721 by Adrien de Pauger. The colony was given to the Spanish in 1763, and a fire destroyed much of the original French architecture in 1788. In 1803, the Americans took over and translated all the street names into English. By 1840, the city was the third-largest metropolis in the country, with the attraction as its main social and economic feature. The area is known for its annual Mardi Gras celebration. Consider trying a popular drink, such as the Hurricane cocktail, served by vendors up and down the street. For a truly original experience, be sure to stop by Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo on the corner of St. Ann.
